Is your studio at home or outside, and if at home, is it a dedicated room or are you having to share it with other family members?

My little studio is in my home, my basement actually, but the space is all my own to make a mess or keep it tidy...my choice!!

Are you finding it difficult to work now? Or has this become a time of great creativity?

I have always had a work routine and try be in the studio everyday...sometimes for a few hours or half a day. Now though I am finding my routine disrupted by other routines such as trying to find toilet paper! The trips to the grocery and pharmacy are much more intense, and trying to stay connected to friends and family more involved with technology like Zoom and Messenger Chat. But all in all, I am still being productive, and enjoy getting into the zone of my work which takes me away from all the new challenges.

What is it you are working on now? Does it relate in any way to current events, or are you letting this be a time of releasing all that while the ideas flow?

I was going to be attending a residency workshop at MASSMoCA in May, which involves creating a plan of action for the week there. Unfortunately, the week has been canceled, so I decided to follow my plan in my home studio. My plan was to create a series of pieces based on shadow photographs that I have been taking for the last few years. I am working on board and creating a first layer as a collage using found papers. Then I will mark up the collage with marks or spontaneous writing using pencil and whiteout pen. The top layer will be a direct image transfer of a shadow photo layered over the collage. Since I have all the materials and supplies to work on this process, it has motivated me to get started on this project.

Do you think this experience will permanently alter the way you create, or do you think you will go back to your way of creating art before, and if it will change you, in what way and why?

Because I find inspiration in nature and my surroundings, I don’t think it will change the way I create or the subjects of my creativity. What this experience has done though is make me appreciate, even more, my connections with friends and fellow artists, and having the ability to love and appreciate art in person. I have very much appreciated that museums and many art organizations have provided virtual shows and art experiences, but I am looking forward to returning to these places to be up close and person with the actual art.
